This is my graduation project when I gained my bachelor degree in Tongji University. The project "health and wellbeing" was given and sponsored by Philips. During the whole design process, I communicated with Philips Shanghai constantly. Here's the description of the topic from Philips:
"We need to first fully and deeply understand what definition, attitudes, and perspectives Chinese people, at different life stages, hold about health and wellbeing; how does their health and welling ecosystem looks like; what do they do on a daily basis to keep themselves healthy and well; how lighting products, especially bulbs, contribute to their motivation and experience of health and wellbeing."
Because the topic "health and wellbeing" is too broad, I have to decide on one focus point to continue my project.
By reading scientific papers online and identifying and brainstorming as much as possible problems, I decided to focus on "Sleep" because it's such an important aspect that influenced almost every part of our life.
Data shown below is a survey on Chinese sleep quality, which was done by DeRUCCI in 2013.
Different light can restrain or encourage the melatonin, which in result keeps people awake or asleep. Apply light certain time, in turns, can change people's biological clock day by day.
Because the way white LED were produced, the light of LED contains huge amount of blue light. What's more, the screen of the smart phones are usually LED screen.
Over 50% of people who live in cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai go to sleep in late night around 11am to 1am. Moreover, people who has been troubled with all kinds of sleep disorder is 27% significantly higher than the average level of the world.
According to scientists, in replace of being under high pressure, playing smart phone/tablet has become the major cause of insomnia. From another research, 16% people admitted that they play with their phone for over one hour before actually falling into sleep.
"Once you play your phone for over one hour, it will take you another three hour to get asleep."
As I mentioned formerly, blue light stimulate human body and makes us awake and concentrated in working, while red light put us into sleep. If we apply red light in the night and blue light in the morning, then day by day, users could form a nice regular biological clock. Then people can sleep better and work better.
What if we encourage people to do more hearing then seeing before sleep?There are lots of app out there provide awesome hearing experiences. These apps including ones that can read the whole website information for you.
